Re: Cannot change network to bridged: No unbridged host adapters

Tony-

I have emailed my support bundle to you.

In answer to your questions to Camge:

1) Running Windows 7 64-bit.  After upgrading from 12.0 to 12.5 bridged networking is broken.

2) No VMs were running.  I had shut everything down to do the upgrade.  After starting 12.5 for the first time discovered that my virtual network config was gone.

3) I did select Enhanced Keyboard Driver during the 12.5 installation.  I do not recall if I had it selected for 12.0

4) I was going to see if Enhanced Keyboard Driver would pass through the media controls (volume, play, etc.) built into my Logitech keyboard.

Get-ScsiLunPath output different for ESXi 6 hosts

hi, I have been using this script flawlessly on my ESXi 5.5 hosts.:

http://www.vmspot.com/disable-esxi-fibre-ports-using-powercli/

However it just stopped working on my ESXi 6 host

i did some debugging and found that the output of Get-ScsiLunPath command is different on the new host.

$Scsipaths=$scsilun|Get-ScsiLunPath|Where-Object {$_.Name -Like"*$WWN*"}

The correct value should be like 5.5 host:

fc.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-fc.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-naa.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:Active

However it is getting:

vmhba65:C0:T0:L71:Active

Therefore the command is not able to parse the variable and results in failure:

Set-ScsiLunPath-ScsiLunPath$Scsipath-Active$false

Please help if anyone knows a solution to it. Thanks in advance.

Cant extend my Datastore

Hello,

First of all i will share some system information, so its easy to understand the issue

We have 1 V-Center server, controlling 1 ESXi 6 U2 server, with 2 local datastores and 1 iSCSI based datastore. (More ESXi servers will be applied later).

We want to expand the iSCSI based datastore on the ESXi host, and have extended it on the Synology server.

When looking at the the datastore in the vSphere client, we can see that the VMFS filesystem have been extended correctly - but the volume hasnt been:

Issue01.png

Im fairly new to VMware, and have normally been working in Hyper-V clusters - where expanding af cluster disk was like 3 clicks...

I would really appreciate if someone, would take the time, to help us through this

Thanks in advance!

Re: So this is more of an annoyance - I had to re-install from scratch whole hard disk - since then - VMWare doesn't re-open windows that were open.

Retested in my box with Fusion 8.1.1 and now the savedState folder down there is also removed on sending Quit to Fusion.

Not sure how it could be there without Fusion not running.

However it does turn out that the folder DOES stick on restarting OS X with Fusion open and in that particular case it does also reopen the window that was already open.

This is with Fusion 8.1.1

Re: vSAN 6.0 LAB - SSD Write Cache performance

I know this thread is old and likely dead but I wanted to add a few things into the mix just for the sake of having a nice bow on it. You will ultimately suffer from two issues in this deployment. I had to spend money to figure this one out the hard way and I am trying to share my experience with others before they fall victim to it. The first issue is that while enterprise SATA SSD drives may be fine for the capacity layer, consumer grade SSD drives will never provide even decent POC testing. This goes doubly well for any test utilizing older HP Smart Array controllers. The P410 series which was the standard for G7 and G6 HPE servers maxes out at 3Gbps and so using a 6Gbps drive as your cache layer will operate less effectively than a SATA II consumer drive. Your best bet for this test to be accurate is to go to any popular online auction site and locate some used or new old stock 6Gb SAS SSD drives. I had sandisk consumer SATA III drives as my cache layer for my lab. Swapped out all six of them with Sandisk Optimus SAS 6Gbps drives for ~$100 each and cust my latency down 90%. VM clones used to take over an hour for a 60GB VM and now they take 6-10 minutes depending on what I am doing.

The other thing to consider about consumer grade SSD is that they generally don't handle power failure well due to using volatile memory and you will end up with orphaned or damaged writes on a power failure.

I have tested this stuff so many different ways and always came to the same conclusion, spend the money up front so your POC impresses and contact some sales guys and see if they will send you a demo host or two in the hopes you will buy some stuff if the POC goes well.

Can't connect USB-Drive to VM with W7 at Workstation Pro 12.x

Hi,

I have an unexpected problem.

I run Workstation Pro 12.1.1 at W10 Host with anniversary update.

I have a USB drive: WD Elements 10BB, 2TB. Runs fine at the Host.

If I try to connect them to the VM with Windows 7 x64, I get an error: Driver error.

BUT: I can connect this drive to an VM with XP at the same Workstation.

This takes a lot of time - more than 5 minutes. It seems, this will not connect to XP, but it will.

But not to the W7 x64 (with the newest, updated VMware Tools).

Does anybody have an idea?

Thanks!

Thorsten

I just change from name to IP of the source machine in convertion wizard and it goes ok .

That, sir, saved my *ss.

Thanks!

Hi MrHoek,

Did you ever got an answer from VMware about the core installation?

Re: vROPs Custom Policy on Custom Groups not working

Where there are multiple policies that might apply to an object, the policy with the highest priority will take precedence. The default policy has the lowest priority.

I got that from this blog here Post #24 - Creating Custom Policies in vROps 6.x - VMware Cloud Management

It sounds like that's what's happening in your situation. I'm still new to vROps so I'll report back if I find a way around this.

Re: Export import Cookies

Hello Pieter,

Where can I get more information on this technique?  I have a Windows 2012R2 application farm with Mandatory user profiles and UEM 9.0.  I have folder redirection enabled with UEM for all the user profile folders except Programs Menu, but Internet Explorer cookies and history are not retained across sessions.  What is the solution to retaining cookies and history across user sessions?  Thank you.

If you log into the vSphere Web Client > Datastores > Right click on the datastore > Increase datastore capacity, can you let us know what you see?

Hopefully you see the datastore here with the 'expandable' property set to 'Yes'. If so, select that and click next, and then change the drop down to use the remaining space to expand the datastore.

Cheers, Matt.

I solved my problem. I uninstalled WS 12.5 and reinstalled and it fixed my problem.

Re: Cannot change network to bridged: No unbridged host adapters

Hi Tony,

another victim, here is what I can add:

- running Win10x64, Version 1511, OS Build 10586.589

- Intel Ethernet adapter I218-V with MS Driver Version 12.12.50.6 of 20.03.2015

- first did the upgrade installation - network no longer working. Before the installation, I shut down all VMs.

- not using the enhanced keyboard driver in 12.0 and did not select it for the 12.5 installation.

- uninstalled 12.5 and did a full reinstall of 12.5 without enhanced keyboard - network was working again, but only for a short time

- tried to troubleshoot the issue, following advice for similar issue in the past - no success

- since I am relying on my VMs for my work and it was very late, I uninstalled 12.5 and reinstalled 12.0 - network works again

I did not delete any of the log files, so if you think that they might contain something of value to solve this issue, please let me know what you want and what I should do.

Kind regards,

Ralf

Hi,

I'm not sure if you can directly upgrade from WinXP to Win10

No you can't do that either.

Lowest Windows version you can upgrade to Windows 10 from is Windows 7.

You can actually upgrade Windows XP to Vista then upgrade that to Windows 7 and from there perform the upgrade to Windows 10, but it's a long haul.

You have to want to take that path badly in order to go through that wall of pain.

Of course after that you are still on 32 bits Windows 10 as mentioned before because there is no upgrade from 32 bits to 64 bits.

Re: Security Related - Stop Powersheel Script from execution

Thanks all for reply but still this won't help.

1. There are lot of people in my environment that have rights and I cannot control them.

2. There can be a case, wherein users can download script from internet and run without proper knowledge, which can have adverse impact

3. Users can connect via Mac which is not part of domain and run those scripts.

I think there should be some third party software that can site in front of vcenter server and can stop this. I am sure, I am not the first person to think about this.

Thanks

Hi,

Is that perhaps a disk connected via USB3?

If so, then you probably want to install the USB3 driver in Windows 7 as this does not come with the Microsoft inbox drivers (USB3 was introduced in Windows 8, before that time only 3rd party drivers added this feature)

Starting with Workstation 12 your Windows 7 guests have USB3 support.

Have a look at the following KB article for the details: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2128105
